About

The editor of this website has decades of experience with using computers, beginning before the advent of the PC when when mainframe computers were the only tools for engineering computing and then later when desktops had floppy disks that were 8 inches in diameter. A few years after the Internet was born in 1973, modem speeds had a speed of 1,200 bits/s. After the Internet had become developed globally, dial-up modems reached the blazing speed of 56 kbits/s (56,000 bits/s) in 1998. Jumping to the present, many people have broadband that started to replace dial-up connections with a speed of more than 1.5 Mb/s (1,500,000 bits/s). In some developed countries it is possible to find broadband with downstream speeds as high as 400 Mbp/s and upstream speeds of 20 Mb/s.

The costs of computer hardware have been radically reduced and the Internet is widely used around the world, especially with the increase in mobile device use, which overtook the desktop for Internet access in 2016. With so many users, the interest in creating a website for personal use such as blogging, or e-commerce has also increased. Unless you have a very fast Internet connection to your desktop computer, you will need to host your website elsewhere and it can be in your own country, or in many countries around the world. You will find hosting offered on English language websites available in many countries, as well as some in local languages.

Even if you can afford to pay for the hosting on a monthly or yearly basis, the services and support both vary widely. With free hosting, the only thing you will waste is your time and the cost of running your computer with an Internet connection. If you just want to test some ideas, you may find a free hosting service that is adequate for your needs. If your interests are more serious such as e-commerce, you must first learn what it takes. Then, if you find that free hosting isn’t good enough, you can look for paid hosting and your experience to that point will be useful in choosing suitable hosting, before you spend money on it.

Although we have used paid hosting since 2003, we are here to share some of our recent hands-on experience in using and trying to use free hosting with you.
